Benefits and Claims

Facial cleansing brushes provide the following benefits:
  • deeper cleaning
  • exfoliating without the need for exfoliating products
  • less use of costly cleansing products
Additionally, because of exfoliating, facial cleansing brushes allow any skin care products to penetrate more deeply thereby having more of an effect. Claims regarding these benefits vary from cleansing to wrinkle reduction.

Cost

The least expensive facial brushes can be found for $20 to $30 and feature rotating brush action. Higher price facial brushes feature sonic brush action, additional speeds, timers, and the power and bushes to use on the body beyond the face.

Brush Action

Brush action can be divided into two groups: those that utilize sonic technology and those that utilize a rotating brush head for cleansing. The sonic technology can be described as many movements from the bristles in the brush head oscillating back and forth. This can translate to 300 or more movements per second for cleaning. Those devices which possess a rotating brush simply spin in a circle. Brush heads such as the Clarisonic have an outer and an inner brush ring. The outer ring of bristles does not move but acts to hold the skin in place to allow the inner ring of bristles to oscillate back and forth to clean the area.

Speeds

Speed settings on the facial cleansing systems vary. Skin type should be taken into account when considering a device. Lower or slower speeds are necessary for sensitive or compromised skin (in the case of acne or other skin conditions). Another consideration when choosing one of these devices is if it will be utilized for washing other parts of the body than just the facial area. Facial brushes can be great for rough elbows or knees as a way of exfoliating or general cleansing. Clarisonic distinguishes their product lines by the number of speed settings they contain. The "Mia" small model has one setting. The "Clarisonic Classic" has low and normal modes. The Plus Model has three modes of low, normal, high and body mode. The Clarisonic Pro Model offers low, normal, high and pro plus body modes. Body mode for the Clarisonic is a normal mode coupled with a pulse. The Nutra Sonic device also merits mentioning because of the 4 speeds it possesses. It has low, high, jitter, and body brush speeds. The rest of the models here have 1-2 speeds and offer either a singular "normal" speed or a slow and normal.

Timer
